If there is one thing that living in Florida all winter long taught me, it’s that it’s time to actually use sunscreen. True story: 99.9% of my life I haven’t used sunscreen. I KNOW. Fortunately [and maybe, unfortunately] I’ve always tanned very easily, burning rarely, leaving me feeling like “Why do I need to use sunscreen if I don’t burn!?” Well friends, let me tell you why. Because then you’ll be 36 and feel like you need Botox all over the place to help disguise your wrinkled face AND some type of invasive laser procedure to remove all of the sunspots you’ve been given. Guilty as charged.
It wasn’t until this past year [and season] that I really began to appreciate taking a proactive approach to my skincare when it comes to sun exposure AND knowing the importance of sunscreen when it comes to preventing skin cancer. Fortunately, I have been diligent in my annual skin checks but I know that’s not enough.
Now that I have gotten more serious about sun care products, I have a few favorites that don’t leave me feeling sticky, are made with safe-for-you ingredients, and serve a variety of purposes. My two favorite brands are both found at Nordstrom [their suncare selection is next level] and after a few months of trialing them out in the intense Florida sun, I can stand behind their effectiveness. If you are stocking your shelves for summer, make sure to check out Nordstrom Beauty for all of your sun care [and other beauty] needs. I love that it all ships for free and if you don’t like something, you can return it free of cost!
Let’s say hello to the brands that are making the cut when it comes to keeping the sun rays at bay all day while I play 😉
First up – Supergoop!
I had noticed this brand all over the internet and finally decided to try it! I love that it is free of all sulfates, phthalates, parabens, petrochemicals, mineral oil, silicone and talc, and also free of fragrances. My favorite part [aside from the above] is that after applying it doesn’t leave white streaks all over the place, and when using the PLAY sunscreen, it is both sweat and water-resistant [jump in that ocean, girl].
Next up, a brand that has the coolest suncare products 😉 Coola. Coola products are also free of sulfates, phthalates, parabens, petrochemicals, mineral oil, silicone, and talc; and are also free of GMOs, gluten, retinyl palmitate, PABA, and synthetic fragrances. Basically, they don’t contain the crap that we don’t want soaking into our skin. Here are a few of my faves —
First up, this hydrating lip oil with SPF 30. I love that you apply it just like a lip gloss, it adds a shine to your lips all while protecting them at the same time.
Next up, probably my favorite product – the scalp hair mist with SPF30. It’s about time I found something that I can use on my scalp and hair that a) smells good b) doesn’t leave my hair greasy and oily and c) actually works and prevents my scalp from getting burnt to a crisp. A few sprays and you’re good to go.
Next up, another go-to product [my nieces loved this one!] This illuminating serum with SPF 30. It gives you a dewy look without leaving your skin feeling greasy, but it does give you a glowing vibe that you can’t miss!
And last but not least — if you’re headed into the sun with makeup, I love this Vitamin C setting spray to make sure everything stays nice and fresh even in the hot sun. It truly works like a charm [and smells delightful right out of the bottle]!
Now that I’m all sun-screened up, it’s time to hit the pool, grab a beach read [along with a cocktail], and soak up the sun in the safest way possible! Cheers to a season of sunshine ahead!
